In April 2025, New York City started handing over pieces of the curb to freight. Not for parking — for staging. The city calls them microhubs: designated curbside zones where a truck unloads once, and the packages complete their last few blocks by handcart or cargo bike instead of by truck. One year in, NYC DOT reports the pilot replaced more than 3,000 truck trips. If you receive deliveries in Manhattan, or you send them, this is the first structural change to how freight physically enters the city since congestion pricing — and unlike congestion pricing, almost nobody is talking about it.

Here is what a microhub actually is, where they are, what the numbers say, and whether it matters for your business.

What a Microhub Actually Is

A microhub is a small, designated curbside or off-street space where a delivery vehicle transfers its load to a lower-impact mode for the final leg. The truck arrives, parks legally in a space reserved for the purpose, and the packages leave on foot or by bike.

That is the whole idea. It sounds modest. The reason it matters is that the expensive, congested, ticket-generating part of an urban delivery is not the drive into the city — it is the twenty minutes a truck spends double-parked on a side street while a driver walks packages into three buildings.

For context on the scale of the resource being reallocated: NYC DOT manages roughly 3 million curbside parking spaces across 6,300 miles of streets. Microhubs are the city deciding that a handful of those spaces are worth more as freight infrastructure than as car storage.

Where the Five Pilot Microhubs Are

The pilot is Manhattan-only so far, across three neighborhoods:

Five locations is a pilot, not a network. But the neighborhoods are not random — dense residential blocks with narrow streets and no loading docks, and the Financial District, where curb access is effectively rationed.

The Numbers From Year One

NYC DOT published results in 2026. The figures are worth reading closely, because they explain what microhubs are good at and what they are not.

  • 3,000+ truck trips replaced in the pilot's first year, which began in April 2025

  • 860 packages per day delivered by handcart instead of by truck

  • 110 packages per day delivered by cargo bike

  • Each handcart replaces roughly 1.5 miles of daily truck travel; each cargo bike roughly 3 miles

Notice the split. Handcarts are doing almost eight times the volume of cargo bikes. That is the honest signal in this data: microhubs mostly work for high-density parcel volume going a very short distance on foot. The founding partner was Net Zero Logistics, with Amazon participating — which tells you the model was built around parcel-scale operations first.

Phase Two Is Open

The city is now seeking new business partners for the pilot's second phase and has opened an interest form for companies that want to participate. No public deadline has been published. What This Actually Means for Your Deliveries

Here is the part most coverage skips. Microhubs are genuinely useful for one profile of freight and irrelevant to another.

Microhubs help if your volume looks like this

Many small parcels, going to many addresses, within a few blocks of each other, on a daily repeating basis. E-commerce parcel delivery, pharmacy runs, small-package distribution. The economics work because one truck stop replaces a dozen, and a handcart never gets a ticket. Microhubs do nothing for you if

Your shipment is a pallet. Or a crate. Or a server rack. Or a piece of furniture. Or anything requiring a liftgate, two people, or inside placement. A handcart cannot move a 400-pound pallet up a service corridor, and a cargo bike capped at 48 inches wide cannot carry a sofa. Freight delivery, white glove, and large item delivery still require a vehicle at the door.

It also does nothing for time-critical single items. A STAT run carrying a specimen with a viability window does not benefit from being staged at a curb and transferred to a handcart. Direct point-to-point remains faster.

Why This Is Happening Now

Microhubs are one answer to a problem every dense city is facing: e-commerce put far more vehicles on streets that were designed before anyone ordered anything online, and the curb is a fixed resource. New York's other answers are already in force — congestion pricing below 60th Street, tightened commercial vehicle regulations, and expanded loading zones.
