A Certificate of Insurance (COI) is a document issued by an insurance company that proves a business carries specific types and amounts of insurance coverage. In NYC, many commercial buildings, property management companies, event venues, and corporate offices require a COI from any delivery or service company entering their property. If your courier cannot provide a COI, your delivery gets turned away at the door.

A standard COI shows: general liability coverage (typically $1 million per occurrence, $2 million aggregate), commercial auto liability, workers' compensation, and the certificate holder's name and address. Some NYC buildings require the building or management company to be listed as an "additional insured" on the COI — which requires advance coordination with the courier's insurance provider.
